Lucid Dreaming

Maria Thompson Corley
Advanced
3 min 30 sec

This short, virtuoso piece is atonal but accessible, hinting at whole tone scales in a way that sounds vaguely French. The opening, marked "drowsily," depicts falling asleep. The rest of the piece is lively: wide-ranging arpeggio figures in the right hand opposite clusters or syncopated bass patterns are interrupted by rapid scale passages. After a lyrical, watlz-like middle section, the opening motives return, leading to a quiet ending that harks back to the slow introduction.
