Chelsea Loew

Chelsea Loew (b. 1992: Charleston, SC) is a composer, music educator, vocalist, and pianist residing in Long Island, NY. She is a recent Fulbright recipient and will spend the 2019-2020 academic year in Wrocław, Poland to write her dissertation composition with composer and soprano Agata Zubel. She enjoys engaging with various art forms when composing and is especially intrigued by the relationship between music and text. Upcoming projects include a recording session with Yarn|Wire (May 2019), a commissioned work for Driftwood Trio (June 2019), a premiere of her choral cycle Luna by the Taylor Festival Choir (May 2019), a premiere by the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic Choir (April 2020), and a commissioned work for Trompo (2020). She has previously worked with performers including Tony Arnold, Popebama, Amy Williams, and Imri Talgam.

Chelsea has been commissioned by groups including Altered Sound Duo, Siroko Duo, the Strong National Museum of Play, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra, the College of Charleston Orchestra, and the Cane Bay Cobra Chorale. Her works have been performed during various festivals including the Composer’s Conference at Brandeis, the National SCI Composers Conference, the Ball State New Music Festival, New Music on the Point, the Oregon Bach Festival, Southern Division American Choral Directors Association, Piccolo Spoleto, and the European American Musical Alliance.

Chelsea is currently pursuing her PhD in Composition from Stony Brook University and holds degrees from Eastman School of Music (M.A.) and the College of Charleston (B.A.). She has studied with numerous composers including Matthew Barnson, Perry Goldstein, Margaret Schedel, David Liptak, Robert Morris, Yiorgos Vassilandonakis, and Edward Hart.

At Stony Brook, Chelsea has served as a graduate assistant teaching undergraduate aural skills and private composition lessons. She has also taught private piano lessons in the Long Island area. While residing in Rochester, NY, Chelsea was the choir director and staff accompanist for Plank South Elementary School and was the graduate assistant for the Composition Department at Eastman. While in Charleston, Chelsea taught piano and music theory for five years at Encore Music Studios, was a music theory tutor at the College of Charleston, played piano for the CofC Contemporary Ensemble, served as the alto section leader for CofC Concert Choir and the Church of the Holy Communion, and took the role of assistant director for CofC Concerts. She has also been a member of the Charleston-based professional ensemble Taylor Festival Choir for the past 5 seasons.

Outside of music, Chelsea loves spending time with friends and family, cooking, caring for her many plants, being on the water, and playing card games.
